‘Getting back the sky’ – a poem by Janet Lees, with music and voice provided by Shaun Crossley. Video by Your Movie Crew.
One of the recurrent themes for a few of our participants was that of addiction; several had been through struggles with alcohol, drugs (prescription or otherwise), or behaviour patterns that were damaging to their lives. And more than one of them wrote or spoke movingly about their past or current struggles, in pieces that you’ll find in our ‘Stories’ section.

We’re hugely grateful, also, to one of our inspiring creative leads – the lovely Janet Lees for this glorious item. Janet is an award-winning and internationally published poet, as well as running workshops on Writing for Wellbeing – and helping to bring out the creative talents of our Other Islanders. Janet has been on her own recovery journey and is an eloquent speaker on the darkness of days in addiction – but also of the joys of recovery. Her poem ‘Getting back the sky’ hasn’t been published before, and we’re so grateful that she’s allowed us to include it in this body of work.

In this rendering, it’s put to music and sung by the very talented Sean Crossley. Janet, we thank you. This perfectly captures the experience of recovery. May it give hope to many!
