The Other Island was created to help give people a voice

The Other Island is a project which aims to show what life is like on the Isle of Man for people whose voices aren’t usually heard.

The Island’s often held out as being a wonderful place to live – and for many people, it’s exactly that. But things aren’t so rosy for everyone, by any means, and for those people it can be hard to be heard.

We wanted to work with a group of people with experience of ‘life at the margins’ – for example, homelessness, insecure living arrangements, surviving on a very low income, or coping with physical and mental health challenges.

To help these people share their experiences, we built a team of creative storytellers – written and visual – to give them the skills to tell their story in the way that’s best for them. We’re now sharing these stories in a range of different ways, including print, social media and on this website, with the aim of helping others to understand what it’s like to be in their shoes.

The Other Island was created to help your voice get heard

Do you have a story to tell? The Other Island is a project which aims to show what life is like on the Isle of Man for people whose voices aren’t usually heard.

The Island’s often held out as being a wonderful place to live – and for many people, it’s exactly that. But things aren’t so rosy for everyone, by any means, and for those people it can be hard to be heard.

We wanted to work with a group of people with experience of ‘life at the margins’ – for example, homelessness, insecure living arrangements, surviving on a very low income, or coping with physical and mental health challenges.

Our aim is to help these people share their experiences. So we’ve built a team of creative storytellers – written and visual – to help them learn the skills to tell their story in the way that’s best for them. They’re learning to share these stories in a variety of forms, including in print, via social media, and on this website – helping others to understand what it’s like to be in their shoes.
