Welcome to the Other Island
We’re a project which enables people living at the margins – people who face a variety of challenges – to tell their stories.
The project has two main aims: firstly, to help those people (often unheard) to find their voices and let their stories be told. We do this by teaching them skills which will, we hope, serve them well in the future, long after the project’s complete.
And secondly, we want to shine a light on what life can be like when coping with (often invisible) difficulties – poverty, isolation, addiction, mental or physical health issues, homelessness or discrimination. We hope to build a bridge of understanding, compassion and (if need be) encouragement for societal change – but also to show the humour, resilience, human kindness and beauty that can be borne out of these trying situations.
Shining a light on hidden stories
Storytelling in words, in images, in video and more.
From being unseen and unheard, our 2019 Other Islanders had the opportunity to find their voices, tell their stories and share those stories with the world. We very much want The Other Island project to carry on, so we can continue to show what life is like on the Isle of Man for people whose voices aren’t usually heard – in words, in images, in video and more…
